Tips For Keeping Your Salon Color Vibrant And Bright

Posted on

If you have recently splurged on a professional color at your local hair salon, then you may want to do your best to keep the color looking as vibrant as possible. Vibrant hair color is obtainable over a long period of time. However, there are a few things that you will need to do to retain the radiant look.

Wash Your Hair Gently

Washing your hair often can strip the color out of your hair, so it is wise to wash and conditioner your hair every other day at the most. If your hair was just just colored, then you should wait at least one day for the color to settle into the pores of your hair. When you do wash, use lukewarm water and a shampoo that is sulfate free. Sulfate-free shampoos do not contain three of the more common ingredients placed in shampoo; sodium laureth sulfate, ammonium laureth sulfate, and sodium lauryl sulfate. These ingredients strip the natural oils from your hair, and the color will often be stripped away as well.

You should also use a conditioner with a UV protectant. This type of product will keep your color from fading from sun exposure. If you are going to the beach, then you should also wear a hat or you should gently rub some sunscreen across the surface of your hair and scalp.

Avoid Heat

If you use a hair dryer, flat iron, or curling iron on a daily basis, then you should know that all of these products can scorch the hair and damage the outer layer of each hair strand. The outer surface is called the cuticle layer. This part of the hair will crack and break apart when it becomes heat damaged. Openings then appear along the hair shaft that allow water into each strand. This water can then pull out the color and leave your hair looking dull and faded.

Instead of using heat to dry your hair, purchase a hair dryer with a cold air feature. Also, you can style your hair by braiding it when wet and by using sleep hair rollers that you wear all night. Smoothing creams and gels can work to straighten hair as well without heat.

If you still want to use heat to dry or style your hair, then invest in a heat protecting conditioner. These conditioners coat and protect the hair strands to minimize heat damage.
